Empowering Workers In Unorganized Sector On Safety, Social Security & Skill Development

Workers in the unorganized sector constitutes nearly 90% of total of total work force requiring focused attention for relief from exploitation, occupational health hazards and the ever increasing suffering due to employment related injury and accidents. The concept of ‘Vision Zero’ is fast gaining international acceptance to improve occupational safety and health standards in work place to achieve zero accident both in organized and unorganized sector.
Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh(BMS), Odisha, supported by German Social Accident Insurance, DGUV, Germany through it’s focal point for India is organizing a workshop on 2nd May 2017 in the conference hall of Budhha Mandir, Near Exhibition Ground, Bhubaneswar with the theme “Empowering workers in unorganized sector on safety, social security & skill development by educating women and children that ‘zero for accident and disease at work place is possible’.
The main objective of the workshop is to initiate a proactive intervention program to reach out the workers in the unorganized sector in order to generate awareness on basic Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) issues for securing workers with harm free and disease free work environment, provide a platform to improve skill, competency and linking with various state run schemes for economic empowerment; and using the ladies folk as change agent for overall development of the society. Initially the project is envisaged for a period of one year.
To start with a batch of 60 ladies workers of Khurda District (ten each from ASHA workers, JHADUDAR, ANGANWADI workers, CONSTRUCTION workers, RAG PICKERS, Contract workers in railways) have been selected for the workshop on pilot mode. The intention is to carry out the program on mission mode with cooperation of stake holders from Industry, Government, regulatory authorities, NGOs and Trade Unions and expected to roll out in all Districts in phased manner.
The program was inaugurated by Sri Bibhu Prasad Sarangi, the Additional Secretary to Govt., Labour and ESI Department in presence of Sri Panchanan Kanungo, Former Finance Minister, Odisha and Sri BK Sahu, Former Insurance Commissioner, Ministry of Labour & Employment, Govt of India and Representative of Indo German Focal Point-Prevention and Social Security for India. On this occasion a pocket size book let was unveiled containing basic safety tips. Sri Gokulananda Jena, All India Secretary, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh presided over the meeting and Sri Ramesh Kumar Behera, Asst. Director of Factories and Boilers moderated the workshop. Sri Ranjan Kumar Sahu, State Organising Secretary of BMS offered vote of thanks.
